Advocacy

For generations, people who have intellectual disabilities have been spoken for, had their decisions made for them, or been ignored altogether.

L'Arche believes that those who find it difficult to express themselves have a valuable voice. This belief is the basis for all of L'Arche's advocacy work.

Many times advocacy is done quietly and in gentle ways. Assistants and core people work together so each core person has the opportunity to share personal preferences about his or her own physical care, social and spiritual lives, and goals for the future.

Other times, L'Arche advocates more publicly for legal and policy changes.

We know that we are powerful when we join all our voices together, and we are willing to fight the injustices faced by people who have intellectual disabilities. Core people, assistants, staff, and board members all work together to educate the public about the gifts of people who have intellectual disabilities and the respect and lifestyle they deserve to enjoy.

L'Arche provides the following opportunities for advocacy and education:

  • Speakers - L'Arche core people, assistants, and staff are available to speak to church and religious groups, professional service providers, students at all levels, civic groups, and others. L'Arche tailors its offerings to the group. Contact the L'Arche office to request a speaker: 202.232.4539
  • Opportunities to join us in advocating for policy change.
  • The L’Arche Institute - Seminars or retreats focused on the topics Practicing a Greater Love; Transforming Person and Society through Sabbath Rest; and Emphasizing the Human in Human Services.
