Keeping Watch

I have often times described my position at L'Arche as "keeping watch." I am reminded that our Lord commanded us to be watchful, and I think of how fortunate I am to have been given the role of watchman through the night hours. . . . By watch I do not mean guard or sit; rather I mean to remain in prayerful attention.

When I was three, I had meningitis, and I couldn’t walk for a while. My mother taught me to walk again because she said she wanted me to be able to do as much for myself as possible. When I was old enough she taught me to read and talked about politics. Now, I read political biographies on my own. I like taking turns reading aloud with someone. I read a book by Barbara Bush. I like how she wrote her story from her heart.
