Being ourselves

One day a group led by a theology professor at Duke University visited. Michael wandered by and sat down in the living room with us. One person asked me, “What is most difficult for L’Arche Assistants?” I turned to Michael and asked, “Michael, what do you think is most difficult for L’Arche Assistants?”  After deep thought, Michael replied, “Being themselves.”

L’Arche does not create schedules to accommodate staff. Rather, their focus is on creating activities and opportunities that support the core people. My favorite part of my job is visiting L’Arche and participating in their activities. There always seems to be a buzz in the air about what might be happening next, and I find that exciting.
