One night I was leading a Bible class consisting of people with, and people without, intellectual disabilities. The focus was the story of Noah’s Ark, and one exercise was for each person to draw a picture of an ark and to put in the boat something that makes the person feel safe. Each person showed their drawing to the group and explained what was in it. Finally, only Maurice was left. I asked him whether he would show us his picture. He held it up silently. I pointed to what looked to me like an ark and asked him what it was. He said, “Boat.” I then pointed to a figure, and asked what that was. He replied, “God.” I looked around again at all the drawings and realized that Maurice was the only one who had God in his boat.
