People who volunteer on a regular basis can enter more deeply into the life of the community and often develop lasting friendships. Regular volunteers do fun things, like go for walks or out for coffee, and do hard work, like cleaning. We generally ask regular volunteers to make a one-year weekly or monthly commitment with a trial period to see whether the fit works for the volunteer and for the community. The amount of time each week or month depends on the volunteer. Some come for a few hours a month; some come for sixteen hours a week!

L’Arche does not create schedules to accommodate staff. Rather, their focus is on creating activities and opportunities that support the core people. My favorite part of my job is visiting L’Arche and participating in their activities. There always seems to be a buzz in the air about what might be happening next, and I find that exciting.
