ASSISTANT
ROLE DESCRIPTION
Assistants at L'Arche Greater Washington, DC share their lives
as part of a faith community of persons with and without intellectual
disabilities.
Assistants should have a desire and a capacity to live with, learn
from, and relate to people with intellectual disabilities on a personal
level, as well as the ability to work well on a team.
L'Arche Greater Washington, DC is required to complete a criminal
background check and driving record review on all new applicants.
In addition, applicants are required to complete a health screening
(including a PPD test). These steps will be completed during the
application process and applicants are NOT expected to provide this
information with the initial application.
Qualifications:
- 20 years of age or older
- College education preferred
- Desire to live and grow in Christian community
- Desire to work with individuals with disabilities; experience
may be desirable
- Creativity, flexibility, attention to detail and ability to
organize time
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Independence and maturity as noted in:
- Ability to share responsibility for managing a home
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Ability to take responsibility for health and safety of others
- Ability to work and live with diverse individuals
- Ability to commit for one year
- Spanish proficiency highly desirable
Responsibilities:
- To build a relationship of mutual care and support with persons
with disabilities
- To foster a home life of unity, mutual respect and participation
by all members
- To provide direct care supports for, and empower core members
in:
- Personal care needs (clothing, hygiene, etc.), money management,
medical care, appointments, family and work connections, household
chores, laundry, medications, meal preparation, transportation
- To participate in a team, including sharing responsibility for:
- Household maintenance and upkeep, shopping and financial management
- Scheduled routines, community celebrations and events and the
work of committees
- Attending regularly scheduled meetings
- To complete all required training
- To complete tasks within required time
- Must be able to communicate and advocate effectively with doctors
and other personnel
